The Amagi-Asakura region of Fukuoka prefecture is located in a rich natural environment, covered with vegetation and abounding in ancient historical relics full of dream and romance.
In the Third Century, the region was known as Yamataikoku, and was ruled by Queen Himiko. Many historical shrines attract interest of students of Japanese ancient history. The Amagi Historical Museum contains historical relics and many excavated articles from ancient tombs.
At the same time, the natural environment, with its beautiful scenery and such waterscapes as the slow-moving River Chikugo and its enchanting ravines formed over several millennia, capture the hearts of visitors.
This region, blessed with rich nature and water, is famous for its firefly spectacle:Vast swarms of fireflies display their lights in June. The temple area of Anchoji in Amagi is a water source for the Fukuoka urban area . "Amagi Mizu-no-Bunka Mura" (the village of water culture), near both Terauchi Dam and Egawa Dam, is becoming more popular as a place not only to study water but also to enjoy and play with water.
