Chitose Airport, the gateway to Hokkaido, celebrated its 70th year in 1996. With a facelift in its runways and terminal building, the old facilities changed into the New Chitose Airport. The arched terminal building is unique in design and consists of five stories and one basement floor. With an airport hotel and car park facilities the terminal building houses souvenir shops, restaurants and galleries. Chitose was the first airport to link itself into the JR(Japan Railways) system. For a train society like Japan, this connection was an important advancement. Serving international flights as well as domestic routes, the airport may perhaps be the main attraction of the city.
