History

The lords of Echizen who survived civil wars

Present Fukui-shi was originated in Kitanosho-jo Castle built by Shibata Katsuie, one of the chief vassals of Oda Nobunaga. After the death of Katsuie, Kitanosho-jo Castle saw many lords. And in 1600, after the Battle of Sekiga-hara, Yuki Hideyasu, the second son of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu was assigned to this place. Yuki was a great lord who loved both literature and martial arts, but he is said to have been assassinated because he refused to follow his younger brother, Hidetada, the second Shogun. His successor, Matsudaira Tadanao, was a notorious tyrant. After he was expelled, the following lord, Matsudaira Tadamasa, who mourned the misfortune of his two predecessors, changed the name of the castle in an attempt to ward off the curse. Fukui was the new name given by Tadamasa.
