Specialities Squid

Squid

The squid epitomizes Hakodate culture. A squid monument stands near the memorial ship Mashu-maru. Fresh squid line the fish market. The season for these delights reaches its peak during summer. Hakodate's summer nights are characterized by the fishing boats' fire that reflect on the dark waters. A "squid dance" is performed at the annual Hakodate Port Festival and at every Bon-odori Dance held in Hakodate. The squid plays an essential role in the life of the local people.

Trappist Butter Cookies, Butter Candy

Butter and cookies made at the Trappist Convent offer simple taste of home. These goodies are available at souvenir shops around town.

Traditional Arts and Crafts Glass

Glass

Since Hakodate is a port town, fishing is extremely popular. And since fishing lines require glass balls, the demand for glass is inevitable. Glass Studio in Hakodate features a workshop, a store, and the Marine Series (1,000 yen - 2,800 yen) which are pieces representing Hakodate's image. With advance notice, visitors can try glass blowing during the months of October through March (2,500 yen, Monday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.).
