The Battle of Hakodate took the lives of the last samurai warriors

The Battle of Goryokaku, also known as the Battle of Hakodate, marked the final effort of the Boshin Civil War which broke out between the overthrown Tokugawa shogunate and the new imperial government. In October 1863, Enomoto Takeaki, vice commander-in-chief of the former shogunate naval force took a fleet of 8 warships to the northern shore of Hakodate and occupied the fort of Goryokaku by the end of the year. However, continued attacks by the imperial forces led the shogunate force into surrender of the fort in May 1864. This defeat put an end to the two centuries of the Tokugawa regime as Japan entered a complete change with the Meiji Restoration.
