Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival (April 23 - May 5, Hirosaki Park)

The vicinity of the Hirosaki-jo Castle is covered with cherry blossoms during this season. 5,000 plants of different kinds of cherry blossoms all bloom at once, coloring the whole park in pink. At night the spotlights highlight the historic castle surrounded by beautiful blooms. A nationally known spot for cherry blossom viewing, Hirosaki Park attracts many tourists every year.

Hirosaki Neputa Festival (August 1 - 7, city center)

The word neputa is derived from nemuri-nagashi which is a ritual of floating lanterns down the river and beaches in the summer to drive away the drowsiness that haunt the farmers during the rigorous work season. Nemuri-nagashi eventually corrupted and became "neputa" in Hirosaki and "nebuta" in Aomori, splitting the popularity of the prefecture's lantern festivals and creating two massive summer events. Contrary to the energetic and vigorous nebuta in Aomori, the neputa in Hirosaki has a graceful atmosphere. The Aomori nebuta floats are three-dimensional and lively, whereas the Hirosaki neputa floats are fan-shaped and still. Chants of "yah ya doh" is accompanied by wooden flutes and drums as the town is taken over by a spiritual atmosphere.
