Misomahajime-sai Festival
Picture
This festival is held to feast the cutting of lumber from Mount Misoma. A 300-year-old tree and weighing more than 2 tons is used to make the mihishiro (casket) for encasing the sacred mirror. Before cutting down the tree, a Shinto priest offers prayers and the imperial carpenters imitate the cutting down of the tree using an ax. The tree is cut down in about 50 minutes using an ax.
