Ukai (Cormorant Fishing) on the Nishiki RiverThis is an event that highlights the summer season at Kintai Bridge. Cormorant fishing takes place from June 1st to August 31st. Fishermen start fishing at night using cormorants that have been trained for a year and a half. Fishermen dressed in traditional costume tow their boat on the river with torches placed at the bow of their boat to attract fish. They tie the cormorants to the end of a rope and let them wade through the water to catch fish. When the bird catches a fish, it is towed to the boat and made to spit the fish out. This traditional fishing method has been going on for the past 370 years. The scene at night creates a fantasy world. |
