Reimei-kan, Museum of Culture

Reimeikan is a historical resources center built where the Tsurumaru Castle once stood. Tsurumaru Castle was a residence of the Shimazu family throughout the Yedo period(1603-1868). In the center, the resources for Kagoshima's history, folklore, and art studies are displayed, Their information about reimei-ki (dawn of the new period) or the last days of the Tokugawa government is especially comprehensive.

Meiji Restoration

Museum of the Meiji Restoration

Visitors enjoy the dramatic presentation of the lives of Saigo Takamori, Okubo Toshimichi, and other Meiji Restoration heroes. They use human body robots, multi-screen, audio, and lighting to create bodily sensations.

Shoko Shuseikan

Shoko Shuseikan, Historical Museum

Shimazu Nariakira, the 28th feudal lord, who was reputed to be the cleverest lord in the closing days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, developed the bamboo forest located west of Sengan-en Garden to build plants for machinery, ceramics, chemicals, and glass. In 1857, he named this plant's complex Shuseikan. Later, it was burned out during the Satsuma-Britain War, and in 1865 the present building was reconstructed. The articles left behind by Nariakira and historical materials of Satsuma district, as well as armor, are displayed inside.

City Museum of Art

In addition to the works by Kagoshima born painters, Kuroda Seiki, and Fujishima Takeji, world famous paintings and sculptures by Rodin, Monet, and Renoir are on display.
