Kumagaya

A popular cherry blossom viewing spot in northern Saitama Prefecture

Kumagaya has been a popular cherry blossom viewing place since the Yedo period (1603 - 1867). In 1927, the blossoms at the former Kumagaya-zutsumi embankment has been acknowledged as one of the nation's natural monuments by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The city was called "Cherry Blossom Kumagaya, Kumagaya Cherry Blossoms," attracting viewers who traveled on the Flower Train from Ueno station, Tokyo. New trees have been planted at the current embankment, and the former popularity has been reclaimed. The 2-kilometer long flower tunnel features monuments of songs and a commemorative inscription of Japan's 100 best cherry blossom view points. Several other monuments including one of the late Takei (Manpei) dot Manpei Park.
