Matsudaira Fumaiko: Matsue's greatest celebrity
Walking through Matsue, one will find signs of "Fumaiko-related" or "Favored by Fumaiko." Fumaiko was the title of the Matsudaira clan's seventh generation feudal lord. He had immense effect on Matsudaira's prosperity, and he founded his own school for the art of tea. Fumaiko developed a simplified version of the complicated art form so that tea ceremonies could be enjoyed by ordinary citizens. Thus the art that was practised only in the castle town area spread throughout the Izumo region.
