Matsue

Matsue: an International Cultural Tourism City where remnants from the castle town period remain

With the Nakaumi lagoon to the east and Lake Shinji-ko to the west, Matsue is the largest city in the San-in region. Matsue has managed to maintain the atmosphere of the castle town days since the city was spared destruction from warfare. These remains and the numerous scenic spots have earned Matsue the title of an International Cultural Tourism City. The nickname "City of Water" describes the city well. A canal runs vertically and horizontally through the city, and there are over 500 bridges. It is said that this city was named after a water village in China. If Matsue were to adopt another nickname, perhaps it would be "City of Tea Ceremony." The Matsudaira clan's seventh generation Fumaiko's passion for tea ceremony has greatly affected the local people's lives. For Matsue citizens, fixing Japanese tea and enjoying a cup is a natural part of their daily lives.
