Lafcadio Hearn's Old House / The Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum

Koizumi Yakumo was the Japanese name of Lafcadio Hearn. The local people called him Herun-san. He moved to Matsue in 1890 at the age of 40 and lived here for one year until he transferred to Kumamoto. His former residence and a museum with exhibits of Hearn's possessions are located in the Shiomi Nawate district.

Tanabe Art Museum

The exhibit features tea utensils that once belonged to Fumaiko as well as other tea-related art pieces. The collection was originally the heirloom of the Tanabe family, and the museum was founded in 1979 by the former governor of Shimane prefecture, Tanabe Choemon. The displays attract non-experts as well since the exhibit consists of highly valuable items.

From JR Matsue station take the Lake Line Bus. Get off at Herun-kyukyo mae (14 min. ride) and walk 1 min.

Yakumo Tatsu Fudoki-no-oka Museum

During the Nara period (710 - 794), the South-eastren side of Matsue is said to have been the center of politics, economy, and culture of the Izumo region. The theory is supported by the remains of numerous tumuli and ancient shrines in the area. The museum exhibit features ancient clay figures, swords, mirrors, and other artifacts that were found as well as the duplicate copy of the ancient literature "Izumo Fudoki."

From JR Matsue station take the Ichihata Bus for Kumano and Izumo. Get off at Fudoki-no-oka (20 min. ride).
