Matsumoto Measurement Museum

References regarding weights and measures and various measuring devices can be seen at this unique museum. The collection consists of items from the early Yedo period (1600 - 1867) to mid Meiji (1868 - 1912) on. The museum features a bronze statue of the Greek goddess Themis who carries the scale of justice.


 

Matsumoto Folk Craft Museum

6,500 items collected by the late Maruyama Taro, an activist for Matsumoto's folk craft movement, are displayed at this museum. Ceramic ware, furniture, and other household items that are neither art nor museum reference draw the attention of visitors.


Japan Judicature Museum

Japan's only courthouse made of wood. Built in 1908, this rather profound-looking building houses arrest utensils used in the Yedo period (1600 - 1867) as well as references and information about the law.

1. Near the Japan Judicature Museum is Horaiya, a former dormitory that housed factory girls who traveled across the Nomugi Pass to work at the silk mill. The house where Kinoshita Naoe, an activist for the Democratic Rights movement, was born has been moved to the area and has now been converted into a memorial museum. The historic relations has given the area its name of Nomugi Kaido: Home of Matsumoto History.

2. Saito Kinen Festival, a new highlight of Matsumoto, will celebrate its 6th anniversary this year.
Matsumoto Bunka Kaikan Hall is the main studio that hosts this international music festival. A group of musicians who share the philosophy of the late music educator Saito Hideo started an orchestra in 1984 in honor of their great maestro. The annual fall event shall bring beautiful music to Matsumoto again this year.
