Mitaka

A culturally enriched town alongside a small creek

Mitaka city, a historical town, has Tamagawa Josui or a small creek in the south, which provided water to Yedo (the present Tokyo) residents from the 17th to 19th century. In the southeast wasabi (Japanese horse radish) field in the Nogawa River basin, is the location of remains from the Old Stone Age and Jomon periods. It is also known as a place which was loved by a number of literary men such as Dazai Osamu, Yamamoto Yuzo, Mushanokoji Saneatsu, and Miki Rofu who all lived in this environment surrounded by nature. In the Taisho period (1912 - 1926) Inokashira Park, the first park ever founded by the Emperor, was opened to the public. A complete sewer system was established in this town, the first in Japan, in the early 20th century. Even today, the municipal government further advances the constructing of the town by emphasizing on the development of the local community as well as building new cultural facilities, while preserving the rich greens and historical heritage.
