Matsushiro, the castle town of the Sanada family, is known for its earthenware. This art was started to supply the households of the Matsushiro clan with daily-use earthenware but disappeared after the Meiji period. The Karakida Pottery Works and the Matsushiro Pottery Works were started in the mid-1960s to revive this industry. The characteristics of this art is its simple yet beautiful design and the green color made from natural glaze. You can fine texture of this earthenware by actually holding it in your hands.
