"Even far, you should visit Zenkoji once in a lifetime," is how the old saying goes. This temple, located in the center of the city, has been the focal point of the Nagano citizens for over 1400 years. More than one million people from all over Japan, regardless of religious sect or social status, visit this temple to receive the blessing of a peaceful death. A long road goes up from Nagano Station to Zenkoji Temple. This is the front approach to the temple and shops line the street making it the city center. It still has traces of a temple town.
When you go to the outskirts of town you will be able to see the Joshinetsu Kohgen National Park with its high and steep peaks in all four directions. Also, you will be able to see the beautiful Chikuma and the Saigawa Rivers where trout and char abound, and the apricot and apple fields.
