Fujiya Inn

Ohtemon-cho, located in front of the Zenkoji gate thrived as a post town of the Hokoku-kaido (Northern Route). The biggest inn which served as the honjin (inn of the daimyo) was the Fujiya Inn. This inn has a history of over 300 years and was appointed as the official inn to the daimyo in 1776. The present three-storied western-style building was rebuilt in 1923 and is being run by the 16th generation owner. All of the 24 rooms are genuinely Japanese and made of zelkova wood and the furnitures and fixtures are intricately designed. The works of famous writers and poets are placed nonchalantly on the shelf. The entrance hall has a old-fashioned look of the Taisho period (early 1900s) and looks very romantic.
