In the early 15th century, a kingdom called Ryukyu was established in the southern seas of Japan. Ryukyu began exchanges with China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, and prospered as a pacific state. The perfect blend of domestic and foreign culture created a dynamic Ryukyu culture. The highly developed dances and traditional music are evidence of the exchanges with neighboring countries. Receptions for Japanese clan officials and Chinese sakuhoshi delegates were regarded as important events in ancient Ryukyu. It is said that the Shurei-Mon Gate which has become the symbol of Okinawa for tourists was constructed to welcome the sakuhoshi delegates. Traditional arts and crafts such as ceramic ware, lacquer ware, dyed fabrics and toys originated in the Ryukyu Kingdom era.

Sakuho refers to the Chinese emperor's acknowledgment of the status of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The Chinese representatives dispatched by the Chinese emperor is called sakuhoshi.
