Manzamou and Manza BeachThe best scenic view in Okinawa is at Manzamou, a cliff of coral reef. The late King Sho Kei of the Ryukyu Kingdom once said that Manzamou is capable of seating tens of thousands of people (Manza means ten thousand seats). The spacious stretch of grass justifies the name. On the other side is the private beach of Manza.●1 hour and 40 minutes on the Nagosai Line Bus 20 from Naha Bus Terminal.

The Mystery of the Ishigantou InscriptionsWalking through the residential area, you will note stone plaques on corners of homes. The plaques are called ishigantou and are talismans to protect from evil. In Okinawa there is a saying that three way intersections collect evil spirits, and thus the talismans are placed in corners to protect the area. Some ishigantou are more extravagant than family name plates. |
