Sake
Sake of Narita has the reputation that its taste equals that of the sake of Nada, which is probably owing to the water drawn up from the ground and the rice produced in Chiba. The ground water in Narita is hard water and it is rather rare to be used for making sake. This water and the good quality rice give the sake a dry and sharp taste.
Pickles
The most popular pickle here is 'Uri no Teppo-zuke.' It is a kind of squash hollowed in the center like a gun and filled with pepper wrapped in the leaf of shiso (a kind of perilla) and pickled in soy sauce and sweet sake. It is popular as a souvenir when visiting Naritasan.
Yokan and Japanese Sweets
Yokan, sweet jellied bean paste, originated from one of the vegetarian dishes eaten at Shinsho-ji Temple. It became very popular among the visitors of the temple in 1882. Since then, not only yokan but also other Japanese sweets in general have been popular as souvenirs from Naritasan and have become one of specialties here.
Tsukudani
Since Narita is close to Lake Imba-numa and the Tone-gawa River, tsukudani (food boiled down in soy sauce) of freshwater fish, such as goby, pond smelt and small shrimps, have been largely produced here. Its simple taste is loved by many people.
Rice Crackers
The rice crackers here are made of rice from Chiba, the taste of which is guaranteed, and carefully hand-grilled over a charcoal fire. These days, you see many people walking along the main pathway to the temple while eating rice crackers which give out the good smell of soy sauce.
Peanuts
Around Narita extends Hokuso Plain, which is suitable for growing peanuts. They have been receiving much attention recently as a health food that contains much vitamin E, and orders to send them as gifts come from all over the country.
Ichiryu-gan
'Ichiryu-gan' is a herbal medicine, which is said to be the sacred medicine of Naritasan. It has been sold since the Yedo Period (1603 - 1867) as a souvenir when visiting the temple. There are many people who keep it as a household medicine for a stomachache.
