Traditional Arts and Crafts

Nikko-bori

The characteristic of Nikko-bori (wood carving) is that artists are concentrating on carving plants and flowers. These artists use gravers called hikkaki-gatana. These are the same kind of tools that were used by the professional artists who created many carvings of Tosho-gu Shrine. Nameplates are popular as a souvenirs and you can watch the artists as they work.
