Kirifuri Kogen

Kirifuri Kogen Plateau

After going through a forest of larch trees and past a group of cottages, you will go on to the toll road. The final bus stop is where Kirifuri Kogen Plateau is located. In July, the plateau (1,000 meters above sea level) is very famous for its abundance of Nikko Kisuge (a kind of lily). However, because of the destruction of nature, the growths of Kisuge have been decreasing. There are many outdoor activities to do and enjoy such as camping, playing tennis, renting cottages and visiting the farms. This is also a popular place for winter skiing.

Lake Chuzenji-ko

Lake Chuzenji-ko

The Lake Chuzenji-ko was formed after the eruption of Mt. Nantai-san. The circumference of this lake is 21 kilometers. There are many hotels, restaurants and gift shops in the north area. The Chuzen-ji Onsen and Shobu-ga-hama are also located in this area. In the south area, there is Mt. Hangetsu-yama and a beautiful primeval forest. The color of Lake Chuzenji-ko's water is clear cobalt blue. It makes a very beautiful contrast to the pink cherry blossoms of spring and the brightly colored leaves of autumn. If you are interested in getting a breath-taking view of Mt. Nantai-san and of Oku-Nikko over Lake Chuzenji-ko, try taking the ropeway from Chuzen-ji Onsen to Chanoki-daira.

Kegon-no-taki

Kegon-no-taki Waterfalls

Kegon-no-taki is one of the famous powerful waterfalls in Japan. The roaring water flows from Lake Chuzenji-ko to fall straight down 97 meters to the rocks below. Take the elevator down to the base of the fall to witness its power first hand. You can experience another superb view of Kegon-no-taki Waterfalls by taking the ropeway from Akechi-daira Plateau.
Elevator: Adults 520 yen (a round trip) / Open 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Ryuzu-no-taki

Ryuzu-no-taki Waterfalls

Yu-gawa River originates from Lake Yuno-ko and winds its way across Senjo-ga-hara Plateau. Finally, the river drops into Lake Chuzenji-ko at Ryuzu-no-taki Waterfalls. The name "Ryuzu" (dragon head) came from the image of the violently splashing and swirling water as if a dragon's head burst from beneath. Another characteristic of this fall is a rock located in the middle of the fall which divides the flow into two directions.

Yumoto Onsen Spa and Kotoku Onsen Spa

Yumoto Onsen Spa is located deep in the interior of Oku-Nikko where there are many onsen-yado (spa inns and hotels). There are also nature study trails around Lake Yuno-ko. This is another area which is popular for winter skiing. If you are interested in taking a walk through the woods, there is a great hiking course which leads you to Lake Kirikomi-ko and Lake Karikomi-ko. Kotoku Onsen Spa has a little inn so that you can enjoy fully its tranquil atmosphere. Also, it would be very nice to try a cross-country skiing in the winter.
