Yasu-ichi

Yasu-ichi (January 14 - 15/ at Koutai-jinja Shrine)

This event, biggest in Obuse has been held since the Yedo period (1603 - 1867). In addition to a special bargain sale in the arcade, a flee market selling Budhidharma mascots and lucky charms is open at night in the site of Koutai-jinja Shrine. It is also worth watching the brave men marching on the burning caals, praying for a healthy life and abundant crops.

Gensho-ji Temple Plant Fair (the third Sunday in April/ at Gensho-ji Temple)

This is a regular event in spring, supporting the flower campaign in the town of Obuse. At the south end of the town along the Matsu-kawa River is Gensho-ji, symbolized by a magnificent gate with smaller gates on the both side. Along the street leading to this temple, are the markets selling plants, flowers, vegetables, and seeds. The additional antique shops and recycle shops also attracts a number of spectators.

Kurinko Festival

Kurinko Festival (the fourth Saturday in July/ town-wide event)

This is a festival of dancing accompanied by some local tunes and drum music. The name of the festival Kurinko is a combination of kuri (chestnuts) and ringo (apple), which are both specialties in Obuse. Everyone in town takes part in this summer night festival.

Flower Fair

Flower Fair (August 12/ on the street of Sakurazuka Kannon)

The streets are packed with many spectators wearing yukata (casual form of kimono worn in summer) on the day of the fair. Chinese bellflowers and perennial plants with yellow flowers of the family, which are necessary items for the following day ritual event, are distributed to all the temple visitors.
