Otaru Tide Festival

(July 26-28)
This festival is one of the most popular sea festivals in northern Japan. Numerous paper lanterns are decorated all over the city. At the Third Otaru Wharf, the main location of the festival, over 4000 paper lanterns are lit on the sea and many ships parade through it. On the street, more than 10,000 dance through the streets in the parade called "Nerikomi," followed by the "Mikoshi (portable shrine) Parade." Other attractions include the fireworks. During this period Otaru comes alive.

Winter Festival

(Beginning of February)
The original snow festival started from this city and spread to such other cities as Sapporo. In this festival the spectators become participants. Take part in the various games and get acquainted with the snow. You will sweat in the cold winter air.
