Saikai-bashi, a Dream BridgeThis is an arch-type bridge with a span of 316 meters and a height of 43 meters, which connects Sasebo with the Seihi peninsula. It was completed in 1955 and spans the Hario Seto Straits which is noted for its swift sea current. At the time of its completion, it was the longest arch-type bridge in the world. This strait is known as one of the three fastest-flowing straits in Japan, with its whirlpools. The scene when the waters of the Ohmura Bay flow out through this narrow strait at ebb tide is very dramatic. Spring (March and April) is a good time to watch the straits and a "Tide Viewing Party" is held at this time of the year. During the cherry blossom season, this area is crowded with tourists, who also come to watch the tide and whirlpools. ●45 minutes by bus from Sasebo Station |
