Goto Takahiko
Chief Priest of Takachiho Shrine

While fulfilling his duties as the chief priest of Takachiho Shrine, Mr. Goto spends a great deal of effort in the preservation of Takachiho kagura. An invitation by France prompted a European tour of kagura dance performances in 1979, the art form's first overseas presentation.

"We thought it would be a great opportunity for us to share with the world our enthusiasm for kagura. A total of ten performers made up of dancers and drummers traveled through France, (former) West Germany, Holland, and Switzerland, hitting 11 cities during the one-month tour. The audience loved our performances and requested endless encores.
Perhaps the Europeans had great interest in foreign culture but kagura also has a way of reaching out to the mind and bringing back the origin of life that they have long forgotten. The accompaniment of drums and flutes resemble the sound of the mother's heartbeat and breath, creating a comfortable atmosphere similar to that of the womb.
The dances are based on nature themes such as fire, water, wood, and soil, all part of a common interest among mankind. Through ancient spirits and worship for nature, kagura conveys deeper appreciation for life."
