castle

The commercial city once prospered as a castle town and a post town

In the 7th century, the Yamato Imperial Court expanded its power eastward to this land. It is said that the Takasaki area was ruled by the Kamitsukenu clan, one of the powerful clans at the time. The remains of those clans in the area may lead your romantic imagination to the ancient world. In the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333), this area was governed by the Wada family, which held an important position in the Government. In 1589, the castle was reconstructed to be a strategic point on Nakasendo route, when the area was renamed to Takasaki. Since the lord of the castle was changed at the time, the town was ruled by different lords during the course of the period, until 1695 when the Okouchi family took the position. The Okouchi family continued to rule the area through ten generations until the time of the Meiji Restoration. Takasaki was a castle town, but also a very busy post town along the Nakasen-do and Mikuni-kaido routes. The town was flourishing in the mid Yedo period (1603 - 1867) even compared to Yedo or the present day Tokyo.
