Hori Tei-en

Hori Tei-en, a Kaiyu style Japanese garden

The residence of the Hori family, who was known as the mine king of the Chugoku region. The estate consists of a main building, a garden, and guest house. The garden with seasonal changes displayed by its plum blossom, cherry blossom, iris, and maple trees is beautiful. The Rakusan-so guest house is built based on shoin-zukuri which is a classic style of Japanese homes. The view of the peaceful garden from the second floor of this guest house makes one forget about passing of time.

From Tsuwano station take the Iwami Kotsu Bus for Nagano. Get off at Hori Teien (23 min.)

Yomei-ji Temple: family temple for generations of the Tsuwano feudal lords

Yomei-ji was built in 1420 and is known as one of 2 great Soto sect temples, the other being Daijo-ji Temple in Kanazawa. The simplicity of the thatched roof temple surrounded by greenery makes one feel a sense of yearning. The treasure reference room filled with valuable Buddhist images and historic literature is a recommended stop for visitors. Other spots in this temple premises include the garden, a bell platform, and the tomb of Mori Ogai.

Taikodani Inari Jinja Shrine with up to 1,045 torii gates.

Halfway up Mt. Shiroyama (Tsuwano-jo Castle ruins), one can see a numerous line of vermilion color torii (shrine gates). In 1773 Tsuwano's seventh generation feudal lord Kamei Norisada had Taikodani Inari built to enshrine a share of the spirit worshipped at the Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. This shrine was built to pray for the safety of Kamei's castle and peace among his people.
