Wakayama

The castle town of Kishu Tokugawa Clan is now one of the best seaside resorts

The city of Wakayama, which is well-known as the castle town of the Kishu branch of Gosanke (the three successor houses of Tokugawa), is located at the mouth of the Kino-kawa River and is blessed with a mild climate and an abundance of greenery. The city presents different ways to enjoy it according to the different areas: around Wakayama-jo Castle are the prefectural office, the city office, museums and shops, in Wakano-ura, a scenic spot, are many old shrines and historical sites dotted about, and in Kada and Tomoga-shima marine activities such as fishing and sea-bathing can be enjoyed. Furthermore, there is a new amusement site, Wakayama Marina City, which holds an amusement park, the prefectural marina and a fish market for tourists, on an artificial island in Wakano-ura. With the construction of hotels and condominiums still going on, the city has come into the limelight as a resort for long stay. The opening of Kansai International Airport has made the city easy to access from outside the prefecture. The city should satisfy those who want to try various tastes out of one plate.
